LUNAS Signs MoU with HAVELSAN and ASELSAN To Strengthen Maritime Defense

On 11th February 2025, Lumut Naval Shipyard (LUNAS) expanded its international collaboration by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Türkiye’s leading defense companies, HAVELSAN and ASELSAN, during the Malaysia-Türkiye Business Forum. The event was graced by the presence of Malaysia’s Prime Minister, YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and Türkiye’s President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, highlighting the strategic importance of this partnership. This partnership will benefit upcoming Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) projects, strengthening LUNAS’s role as a leading national shipbuilding and shiprepair company. This will focus on technology/know-how transfer, innovation, and industrial cooperation to enhance Malaysia’s maritime defense capabilities.
In attendance for LUNAS were Chairman, YBhg. Datuk Dr. Shahrazat Haji Ahmad; Chief Executive Officer, Ir. Azhar Jumaat; Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Puti Mazura Mashudi; and Head of Corporate Strategy and Business Development, Ir. Muhammad Hanif Muhammad. On behalf of HAVELSAN and ASELSAN were Dr. Mehmet Akif Nacar, CEO of HAVELSAN, and Ahmet Akyol, CEO of ASELSAN, reinforcing Türkiye’s commitment to defense collaboration with Malaysia.
This collaboration is particularly significant as ASELSAN and HAVELSAN, through their business partnership, spearhead the Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) of Türkiye’s Barbaros-class frigates, showcasing their expertise in naval system integration and modernizing combat systems. Their experience in upgrading complex naval fleets aligns with Malaysia’s aspirations for a more self-reliant, advanced maritime defense infrastructure, leveraging local expertise for long-term sustainability.
In line with this collaboration, LUNAS has recently reinforced its specialized department, the Combat System Centric, to cater specifically to combat system engineering and integration. This department is aimed at advancing and strengthening LUNAS’s capabilities in naval systems. By partnering with HAVELSAN and ASELSAN, this department’s expertise will be significantly enhanced, empowering the team, particularly amid setting up work for the Shore Integration Facility (SIF) for the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) project.
By working with HAVELSAN and ASELSAN, LUNAS aims to enhance and expand its capabilities in shipbuilding, combat system integration, and digital defense solutions, ensuring the long-term sustainability efficiency and security of Malaysia’s defense sector. This MoU reflects our unwavering commitment to delivering excellence in every aspect of naval engineering and defense innovation, solidifying our position as a key player in the maritime industry.
