KD KASTURI: A Testament to Resilience and REFIT Excellence

KD KASTURI, the lead ship of the Kasturi-class corvettes, has long been a cornerstone of the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN). Commissioned in the 1980s, this versatile vessel has played a critical role in Malaysia’s maritime defense, serving under the 22nd Corvette Squadron and based in Lumut, Perak. Designed by Germany’s HDW (Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft) based on the FS 1500 design, KD KASTURI has consistently proven its reliability and adaptability over the decades.

KD KASTURI is equipped with a range of advanced weaponry, making it a versatile platform capable of addressing various maritime threats. It features primary and secondary artillery, short-range air defense systems, robust anti-ship missiles, and effective anti-submarine torpedoes. These advanced systems ensure that KD KASTURI is well-prepared to handle modern combat challenges.

KD KASTURI underwent its first major modernization effort in 2013 under the Service Life Extension Program (SLEP). This program aimed to extend the vessel’s operational life and enhance its combat readiness. However, the journey of modernization did not stop there. KD KASTURI later embarked on its first comprehensive REFIT program after SLEP, marking a significant milestone in the vessel’s continuous maintenance and capability enhancement. This REFIT included:

    1. Servicing and Overhaul of Piping Systems – Ensuring the vessel’s internal systems were in optimal condition.
    2. Replacement of Navigation Radar – Upgrading to modern radar systems for improved navigation and situational awareness.
    3. Servicing and Overhaul of Underwater Systems – Enhancing the vessel’s underwater capabilities, including sonar and propulsion components.
    4. Servicing and Overhaul of Propulsion Systems – Covering critical components from the rudder, controllable pitch propeller (CPP) hub, and shafting arrangement to the gearbox, ensuring optimal propulsion performance.

Additionally, the main engines underwent a separate routine overhaul under a government contract, reinforcing KD KASTURI’s operational reliability for continued service in Malaysia’s maritime defense.

LUNAS successfully completed the REFIT program on 2 December 2024. The vessel was handed over to the Royal Malaysian Navy on 14 January 2025. The successful completion of the REFIT program by LUNAS underscores the importance of local expertise in maintaining and modernizing naval assets. KD KASTURI’s upgraded systems, and enhanced capabilities ensure that it remains a formidable force in the RMN’s fleet, ready to tackle modern maritime challenges.

KD KASTURI’s journey from its commissioning in the 1980s to its recent REFIT completion is a testament to the resilience and dedication of the Royal Malaysian Navy and its partners. With LUNAS at the helm of the REFIT program, KD KASTURI has been restored to its full capability, ready to continue its vital role in safeguarding Malaysia’s maritime interests. This achievement not only extends the vessel’s operational life but also reinforces Malaysia’s commitment to maintaining a robust and capable naval force.
