On August 25, 2024, Lumut Naval Shipyard (LUNAS) successfully completed the detailed design phase of the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) project, meeting the project timeline. The official handover of the completed design took place on September 23, 2024, at Lumut Naval Shipyard attended by key figures including Ir. Azhar Jumaat, CEO of LUNAS; Captain (R) Rosnizam Che Puteh, Director of the LCS Project at LUNAS; First Admiral Ir. Ts. Franklin Jayasekhar Joseph, RMN LCS Project; Captain Ir. Malik Hj Sulaiman, Director of Engineering RMN LCS Project; and Mr. Denise Garnier, LCS Programme Director, Naval Group, along with esteemed delegates from the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN).
Celebrating Local Talent and Expertise
The detailed design was entirely developed by local talents, showcasing the expertise of Malaysian designers in creating a comprehensive combat-capable warship design. This achievement not only recognizes the capabilities of local professionals but also aligns with international standards, having been approved by the Design Authority Naval Group France and Bureau Veritas.
Cost Efficiency and Future Prospects
The locally developed design is expected to reduce costs for future generations of LCS, should the RMN decide to continue with the 15-to-5 Transformation Plan. This initiative will also streamline training processes, crew exchanges, and assimilation, as well as the procurement and replacement of spare parts, ensuring the continuity of the supply chain, particularly for domestic suppliers and vendors.
This milestone elevates LUNAS as a competent warship builder, encompassing project management, contract management, international supply chains, and complex ship construction. The conducive shipbuilding industry ecosystem will enhance Malaysia’s reputation as a country with comprehensive infrastructure, positioning LUNAS as a leading entity in the Malaysian warship construction industry.
